Never Known Love Like This

by Tony on September 20, 2011

In 1997 I was on a Navy Ship called the USS LaSalle. We were in the Black Sea. As a band member you have a lot of time to yourself if you are riding on a navy ship. One day as I was studying some scripture from Ephesians I came across a verse that said God has an inheritance in His saints. (Ephesians 1:18) I was stunned so I asked, “I know the benefit for Jesus dying for me but, what do you get out the deal?” He spoke softly and surly and simply said, “I get you.” That was a starting point for me discovering the tremendous love God has for us all. I wrote this song just a few months later. Now in 2011 I think I’ve got it put together correctly.

Ephesians 1:17-18
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you spiritual wisdom and revelation in your growing knowledge of him, since the eyes of your heart have been enlightened – so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints…

1. You know I’ve been here
30 years or so.

I aint never known the kinda love
you’ve just shown to me.

The God of the universe,
Created the stars, the heavens and the earth.
I know you died for me, but now I really know.

If I’d been the only one
Jesus would have come for me.
Up to now I didn’t really know.
I really didn’t understand about the way you really feel.
I didn’t know, Lord.
I really didn’t understand your love.

2. I said I loved you but
that is such shallow ground.
But a seed sown deep in  my heart
secures my faith in you.

The God of the universe,
You bring new life into the earth.
I knew you died for me, but now I really know.

If I’d been the only one
Jesus would have come for me.
Up til now I didn’t really know.
I really didn’t understand about the way you really feel.
I didn’t know, Lord.
I really didn’t understand your love.

Chorus:
Lord why did you do it?
Still  don’t understand what you stand to gain,
if all you gain is me.
If I’m your inheritance
Let it be, Lord.
Let it be so, but you knocked me on the flo
Cuz I never known love like this before!

Tony, the groove is SUPER hooky. The only thing I’d say that could be more constructive is to open up the lyrics a little more… a little less wordy, so there’s more space, especially in the “chorus.” It doesn’t have to rhyme, but it needs a bit more rhythmic flow in the phrasing. Hope that helps. I dig the groove….. it’s about as nasty as I remember you being capable. Nice.

Tony: I agree but it’s hard to change once something gets locked in.

Rob: I know. I’d actually pull the vox and give it to another singer, to see what they’d do with the root tracks. That’s a production idea that goes a long way. See how they sing it, etc. I’m NOT suggesting you give the song away, or NOT sing. Just that you have a different perspective given that you wrote it.

Tony: Good idea. I’m bent on performing these myself.
Tony: Excuse me, not bent.

Rob: lol

Loved the tune, Tony : the groove, the message, the vocals , the whole thing. It is always great to talk to you. I really hope we can hang out again one day when I get past all of my medical stuff. Miss you and love you. Keep writing music and lifting up Jesus. You are a big inspiration to me.
P.S. I remember that cruise back in 97 well. I think I learned a few things about myself during that time too.
